Can there a fun side to changing our behaviour and acting responsibly. DDB Stockholm have launched a very simple (and brilliant) experiential campaign for VW designed to get people to change their lazy behaviours and ultimately drive environmentally friendlier cars. They turned a staircase in an underground station into a piano. Of course everyone wanted to take the stairs.

Decode: Digital Design Sensations showcases some interesting digital exploration around three themes: Code looks at constantly fluid and ever-changing works, interactivity is directly influenced by the viewer and network presents digital traces, looking at how advanced technologies and the internet have enabled new social interaction and self-expression. I particularly liked the entrance/exit tunnel of digital living ‘wands’ that lit up and bleeped as you approached, the eerie mirror that left a ghostly impression of you if you stood still for long enough and the tree that moved in synch to the breeze outside the V&A and dropped leaves as you approached which then moved on the ground as you walked through them… worth a look if you are in town – it’s on until 11 April 2010.

We were blown away by “Mother Courage” at The National Theatre. Staging is suitably Brechtian with stage hands and crew forming part of the cast and scenes ranged from minimal black type on fabric to digital projection. Awesome performances by the lively Fiona Shaw (surprisingly no sign of a safety harness in her jaunts around the stage 20 feet on top of a wagon) and music by the amazing Duke Special. You would be forgiven for thinking this was an Irish version of Brecht’s classic with 3 lead voices displaying their Irish credentials – the almost Ian Paisley-style priest adding an extra edge to the war setting.
An extra bonus was a free after-show concert by Duke Special in the National foyer. There are just a few of these unique gigs remaining – so book quickly.
Mother Courage runs until the 8th December.

With a simple philosophy of ‘joie de vivre’ that celebrates life through art, Spanish designer and artist Javier Mariscal is light relief: Playful, refreshing and fun with energetic cartoon characters and hand drawn marks. On show is the identity for Barcelona, as it emerged from the Franco era; Cobi, the official Olympic mascot of the Barcelona games; the identity for Camper for kids shoes; a Letters wall and ‘interiors and other interventions’ to name but are few. It will make you smile.
